Backpacking 101

Few things I learned after and during my backpacking days.

Stuff
  • A 100L rucksack, a 20-30L foldable daypack, and a hard case for your laptop and tablet.
  • Packing pouches to keep clothes sorted, a power bank with a USB-C cable, and a combination padlock.
  • Montelukast, Levocetirizine, Ibuprofen, PCM, and ORS.
  • One pair of shoes, one pair of sandals, two sets of casual clothes, one set of formal clothes, and a packable blanket.
Stay
  • When travelling solo, skip budget hotels and try hostels and homestays.
  • Hostels for metros, homestays for coastal towns and mountains.
  • Confirm check-in and check-out time before you travel.
  • Save offline maps, tickets, and bookings before any travel day.
Travel
  • Take overnight trains or buses, saves a day of travel and a night's accommodation.
  • Travel overnight or leave very early. Avoid wasting a full day just getting somewhere.
  • Carry snacks, water, cash, and a rain jacket.
  • Ask your host or locals for the best route to your next stop.
  • 100 km in the mountains >= 200 km on the plains. Plan by hours, not distance.
Hacks
  • Do your laundry two days before you move, not on the last day.
  • Never trust someone you just met, especially with your valuables.
  • Visit palaces, forts, and museums on weekends, temples and shrines on weekdays.
  • Split cash across wallet, backpack, and phone cover — never keep it all together.
